Straw Bale Construction

Nestled on 15 acres overlooking Deep Creek Lake, the property that is home to BMR is nearly as unique as the project itself. Rolling hillsides, ever-changing lake views, and a dense canopy of timber all combine to create a perfect setting. The site includes access to 100' of waterfront, where kayaks, canoes, and pedal boats will be available for guests' use, as well as facilities for waterfront picnics and games. Visit the "Around Deep Creek" page to learn about the extensive array of activities available in the immediate area. Deep Creek Lake is an all-season vacation heaven - from boating, fishing and hiking, to dog sled rides, snow skiing, and fine dining.

"The real source of wealth and capital in this new era is not material things . . it is the human mind, the human spirit, the human imagination, and our faith in the future."
~ Steve Forbes
At the heart of Blue Moon Rising is the Green Building. Here, workshops, seminars and classes will be offered, on topics as varied as green living, the arts, and meditation. Perhaps you'd like to learn basic survival skills, or how to make your own paper and journals, or ways to simplify your life? Guest authors, hand weavers and spinners, musicians, and organic gardeners - we plan to use as much local talent as possible to contribute to the eccentric rhythm of BMR. There will be on-going opportunities for contributing to 'pay-it-forward' projects. The Green Building will also be available for small weddings, reunions, and other gatherings. The building itself is truly a work of art - carefully designed, meticulously built, its elements and components thoroughly researched and located. We have combined age-old practices and brand-new technologies into an example for beautifully simplifying - back to the future.
"Organic architecture seeks a superior sense of use and a finer sense of comfort, expressed in organic simplicity".
~ Frank Lloyd Wright

The 14 individual rental cottages have been aptly named "Waldens", and are described in more detail on their own page. Each will be available for one- or two-week vacation stays, either as part of an 'enrichment package', or on it's own.
"We require from buildings, as from men, two kinds of goodness: first, the doing theirpractical duty well; then that they be graceful and pleasing in doing it; which last is itself another form of duty".
~ John Ruskin, 1880
Parking will only be available down at the Green Building; there will be no car exhaust, intruding headlights, or slamming car doors to disturb the peace of the Waldens. Solar-powered transportation will be provided for luggage and guests from the parking area up to the Waldens. One cornerstone of BMR is that nothing goes to waste. Each and every tree that is taken down is carefully evaluated so that it can be reused elsewhere on the project. Whether as trim, a support post, or simply as wood to fuel the highly effcient masonry stoves, these trees will be given a new life in the fabric of BMR. The dirt removed during excavating foundations is carefully sifted and mixed with clay, water, and lime to become the natural plaster coatings on interior and exterior strawbale walls. Excess soil is also used as fll for earthbag retaining walls. Rocks uncovered during construction will become patios, walls and drainage ditch liners. Containers for composting and recycling will be available on site.
